David Asher Brown
David Asher Brown is a rare voice among young, American composers. The Metropolitan Opera’s William Lewis praised him as, “one of the most brilliant music makers it has been my pleasure to serve”. His craft innovatively draws on the sounds and techniques of everything from early music and north Indian classical music, to Balinese gamelan, klezmer and jazz.
Brown is a doctoral music composition candidate at the University of Southern California. His previous degrees were earned at the University of Texas at Austin and Florida State University. Brown’s musical activities have taken him around the world, including conducting engagements in Austria, France and the United States, as well as a composition grant in the Czech Republic. Additionally, he recently discovered 48 complete Yiddish-language operas thought to have been permanently lost and has created a performance company to begin bringing new life to these works (www.LAYiddishOpera.com).
Brown has also engaged in serious study of various non-western musical forms. For two years, he worked closely with Dr. Michael Bakan, head of ethnomusicology at Florida State University and an expert in Balinese gamelan. He also benefits from private study with Pandit Nandkishor Muley, one of the world’s finest santoor players who has performed with Ravi Shankar and Zakir Hussain.
