 Stephen Schwartz

Stephen Schwartz was born in New York City on March 6, 1948. He studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School of Music preparatory division, and received a BFA in Drama from Carnegie Mellon University.

As a composer and lyricist for the theatre, his shows include GODSPELL, PIPPIN, THE MAGIC SHOW, THE BAKER’S WIFE, WORKING, RAGS, CHILDREN OF EDEN, and WICKED. Shows for young audiences include CAPTAIN LOUIE and GEPPETTO & SON.

For films, he wrote lyrics to Alan Menken’s music for Disney’s POCAHONTAS, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTE DAME, and ENCHANTED, and music and lyrics for the DreamWorks animated feature, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT.

Other credits include the English texts, in collaboration with the composer, for Leonard Bernstein’s MASS, the title song for the play and movie BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE, and two CDs of new songs, RELUCTANT PILGRIM and UNCHARTED TERRITORY.

He has written two pieces for cello, “Brief Encounter for Cello and Soprano” and “Duet for Cello and Violin.”

Awards include three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards, and four Drama Desk Awards. Mr. Schwartz is a member of the ASCAP Board of Governors and the Council of the Dramatists Guild.
